GW was in Alexandria, Va. with his regiment recruiting men for his next expedition. Va. Lt. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie replied to GW’s 28 July letter about trouble with payments to the troops. Dinwiddie said he was sending 600 pounds to help alleviate the situation. He again encouraged GW to head directly to Wills Creek, Pa./Md. to begin the next campaign against the French, though GW had most likely not yet received Dinwiddie’s original orders to do so.
