GW at Philadelphia. GW sent the Five Nations a speech, “to cement the peace between the United States and you,” and a white belt of wampum. GW also wrote the Senate indicating that the Indians should receive annual presents, “conditioned on evidence of their attachment to the interests of the United States.” He asked for their advice on an article granting 1,500 dollars annually for this purpose.

Artist Charles Wilson Peale wrote to GW’s personal secretary Tobias Lear regarding his museum of natural history and whether he could publish the fact that GW had recently made a donation to it.
