GW at Philadelphia. GW wrote instructions to Secretary of War Henry Knox on how to respond to the Seneca Indians concerning their 10 Jan. letter. GW did not believe that their diplomats sent to Philadelphia were representative of their nation, so he stated that no renegotiation of their land given by treaty would be possible. In response to their request that education be provided them, GW replied that it would be too expensive, but enclosed Timothy Pickering’s 8 Jan. letter on the subject to give Knox ideas on how to improve their situation.
