GW on his way to Alexandria, Va., potentially by traveling down the Potomac River. He and some men traveled below the mouth of the Shenandoah River around the Fairfax-Loudoun county line in Virginia. GW recorded this trip in his notes and a sketch map.  In the “Notes on the Navigation of the Potomac River above the Great Falls,” GW documented the rocky outcrops, rough waters, and various waterfalls which made it difficult to maneuver small canoes and carriages.
