His General Orders for 7 July include a message to all American officers to be an example of bravery to their troops.  He ordered different troop arrangements, no soldier sleep outside of their encampment, all sentries posted be American, and the sick and wounded too ill for the regiment’s surgeon to care for be removed to a hospital.
