GW at American headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In his General Orders he called for all members of the Continental Army to distinguish themselves based on rank by colored cockades in their hats or other badges, as the army had no uniforms.

He wrote to Brig. Gen. John Thomas asking him to reconsider his resignation from duty, “For the sake of your bleeding Country, your devoted Provence, your Charter Rights, & by the Memory of those brave Men who have already fell in this great Cause.” He also wrote to the president of the Mass. provincial congress, James Warren, asking that he lay the matter of the lack of funds to pay all the soldiers before the general court.
