GW, from Philadelphia, wrote to John Armstrong, whom he had met during the French and Indian War, acknowledging receipt of his letter of 23 December, 1791, and discussed the loss of soldiers in the Indian War. He concluded with his optimism that issues with the Indians would be solved, saying, “I am sure there never was a people who had more reason to acknowledge a divine interposition in their affairs than those of the United States.”
