GW was presumably en route from the Potomac River to Alexandria, Va. where he would arrive within the week. Va. Lt. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie’s 1 Aug. letter to GW remarked that the Virginia Council met on this day and resolved to send forces immediately over the Alleghany Mountains to challenge the French.  The Council believed the French would be “strongly reinforc’d next Spring.” The marching troops were to either take the French fort or build a fort of their own.
