In Md., GW traveled from Chester, to Rockhall, to Hornes Point, a landmark near Annapolis, by boat. In his diary, GW described a very windy and rocky boat ride at the hands of an inexperienced crew: “I was in imminent danger, from the unskilfulness of the hands...added to the darkness and storminess of the night.” The boat ran aground at Hornes Point, where the party was forced to spend the night.

GW’s friend and former cavalry commander Henry Lee wrote to welcome GW to the South and express that he anxiously awaited GW’s arrival.
