N.J. Supreme Court justice Isaac Smith wrote GW from Trenton, N.J. recommending his son John Pennington Smith for the office of the attorney general in the western territory. A letter from former officer Jacob Welsh to GW, which GW forwarded to Thomas Jefferson the next day, has not been found.
