25 March 1789

From Mount Vernon, GW responded to N.Y. Gov. George Clinton’s 10 March letter, thanking his friend for the invitation to host him if he should have to go to N.Y. as the new president. However, GW declined and outlined his plan to rent rooms, not wanting to place a heavy burden on any one family at length. GW also wrote to former artillery commander Henry Knox, thanking him for his letters of 12 and 16 March. He noted the awkwardness of contemporary affairs, with everybody waiting for Congress to begin its first session.

Lawyer David Finney wrote GW, requesting the position of Naval Officer for the state of Del.
