GW at Philadelphia. Today was GW’s 60th birthday. Lawyer John Brown Cutting sent GW a birthday poem, written by people “eminent in polite literature.” The poem has not been found. Attorney General Edmund Randolph wrote Tobias Lear, GW’s personal secretary, wishing GW a happy birthday and apologizing for not being able to meet with him, being ill.
GW wrote to Thomas Jefferson about George Walker and architect Pierre L’Enfant’s dissatisfaction in their work designing the federal city.
