GW at Philadelphia. Surveyor Andrew Ellicott wrote GW offering to help establish the boundary lines agreed upon in a peace treaty with the Creek Indians. GW responded the same day and instead appointed him to survey the boundaries of the new national capital. GW then informed Thomas Jefferson of his selection of Ellicott for this job and asked him to send Ellicott instructions on how to proceed. Jefferson soon did so, and Ellicott left to begin the survey two days later.

David Frederic Oehler, a German merchant, asked GW to help him recover debts owed to him; GW later replied through his secretary that it was inappropriate to ask the president to intervene in private affairs.
