GW at Philadelphia. GW, responding to James O’Fallon’s defiance in Ky., issued a proclamation declaring that all persons violating the Indian treaties would be prosecuted “with the utmost rigor of the law.” GW also wrote to Alexander Hamilton authorizing the payment of 40,000 dollars to the Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, to support the diplomatic service. Lastly, GW wrote to Lafayette updating him on the state of United States affairs. He assured Lafayette of his improved health and wished Lafayette well on a personal note, adding “Like you, my dear Sir, I sighed for retirement--like me, I am afraid, you must continue the sacrifice.”

Samuel Powell wrote to GW enclosing an act of the Pa. legislature that set up frontier defenses for the state. Pa. politician Charles Pettit wrote GW a long request for public appointment, but received no offer of employment.
