GW at Mount Vernon. GW wrote to the commissioners of the federal district that the current landowners needed to agree to terms for selling their land so that selling lots and erecting public buildings could begin. GW wrote to his secretary Tobias Lear that peace with the Indians was impossible until they could “restrain the…disorderly conduct of our own borderers.” GW wrote to his agent Battaile Muse, remitting his tenant Joseph Hickman’s rent because he had lost his home to fire. Finally, GW wrote to Md. politician William Tilghman concerning business related to settling the Colvills’ estate.

Robert Ballard, surveyor for the port of Baltimore, wrote GW asking for a position and was later appointed to be an excise inspector. Former soldier Augustus Christian George Elholm wrote asking for a public examination of his mathematical discovery. Tobias Lear wrote that GW’s grandson was not succeeding academically because his school had too many students and his masters lacked dignity.
