GW at Philadelphia. Gen. Arthur St. Clair wrote GW thanking him for his appointment as commander of the army in the Indian War. He defended his conduct during the recent disastrous campaign and offered to undergo an inquiry concerning it. He explained that he was offering his resignation from this post for health reasons. Finally, he offered to help his yet-to-be-named successor.
