GW in New Brunswick, N.J., en route to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Valentine Crawford, a man hired by GW to survey his land on the Youghiogheny, near Chartiers Creek, and along the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers, wrote him a letter. In the letter, Crawford described the difficulties of James Cleveland’s survey of GW’s land along the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers. One of the problems was that of indentured servants who ran away. Crawford also noted that he and others were creating committees in the area and raising an independent company of militiamen.
