GW at American headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He held a Council of War meeting discussing the presence of roughly 11,500 British soldiers in and near Boston. They determined nearly 22,000 men were needed to defend Boston and surrounding military posts and decided officers were to be sent out immediately to recruit more troops to meet this number.
In his General Orders for the day, GW announced that Brig. Gen. Horatio Gates was named Adjutant General of the Army. He also ordered Brig. Gen. John Thomas, the commanding officer in Roxbury, Mass., to send written reports of his company’s daily proceedings and all arrivals and locations of vessels in the bay.
