William Preston wrote GW on this day with directions to give money to Stephen Trigg, a burgess for Fincastle County, Va., to pay for a “Survey at the Mouth of Cole River.” The letter notified GW of a land purchase in North Carolina by Col. Richard Henderson from the Cherokees. Preston worried about Henderson’s intentions and feared that he would attract a large number of people to settle in the area.
