GW at Philadelphia. GW wrote to Georgetown merchants and landowners William Deakins, Jr. and Benjamin Stoddert, permitting them to seize lands from residents, and compensate them when possible, in the area meant for the future capital of the United States. GW also wrote to planter John Hoomes about Hoomes taking GW’s donkey Royal Gift for the summer, explaining the donkey’s peculiarities when it came to breeding with horses.

Thomas Jefferson wrote to GW, enclosing the report by Arthur St. Clair, the Governor of the Northwest Territories, on the Indians of the area. N.H. Senator Paine Wingate wrote GW a letter recommending three men for federal positions, but none of them would receive appointments. War Department clerk John Stagg, Jr. presented GW with a list of officers who served in the late Continental army.
