11 May 1775

GW at the State House in Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress. During this day’s session, the delegates decided to keep their proceedings private. A letter was read from colonists in England, wherein they stated that King George III rejected the colonists’ petition from the First Continental Congress, that Earl Chatham’s plan for reconciliation had failed, and that the king was sending more British troops to America. Delegates from Mass. reported on the status of fighting at Lexington and Concord, Mass.

GW had dinner at Dr. William Shippen’s and once again spent the night at cabinetmaker Benjamin Randolph’s home.
